Bolton Priory.

Bolton Priory is a 12th century Augustine Priory and in its heyday, there were 26 cannons and 200 lay workers who inhabited it, they were self-sufficient, their income to improve the Priory came from sheep farming Corn Milling and revenue from the nearby lead mines.

They were very active in the area and the Priory itself was quite large however during the Dissolution of the monasteries, the Priory got taken down in certain parts but the locals were allowed to keep one end for worship. It was a magnificent building and still is, even though the main of it is in ruins.

We were fortunate that we had the expert knowledge of one of the priory guides, Mr. Richard Neale to answer our many questions and point out features that we may have missed.

The location forms part of the Duke of Devonshire estate and is managed beautifully with conservation being at its heart. The whole area is a must to visit and a full day can pass enjoying the Priory and the surrounding countryside.
