St Oswalds Church.

St Oswalds Church, situated adjacent to Bolton Castle dates from the 14th century. It's quite small but is very interesting and we would recommend that it is visited before going into the Castle.

There are some interesting features with this church and the fact that it is as old as the castle and in a better state of repair makes it even more of a "must have a look" situation.

We were particularly drawn to the drains around the church itself and we spotted something that looked like a small well.

Entering the church are engravings on the door stone frames. We had been told that the marks were from the garrison at Bolton Castle who used the stone to sharpen their weapons. This sounds doubtful but the story is quite intriguing and could have some truth in it. The Castle was under siege in the Civil war and could well have been old fashioned Graffiti.

The church is still in use today and is a testament to it standing the test of time.
