Middleham Castle is, a delight to visit and worth the entrance fee. Although visited 25 years ago, our revisit still filled us with curiosity. There are not enough information panels but the staff in the ticket office know their history and filled the gaps in and satisfied our string of questions. It might be better to buy the booklet in the castle.
We were amazed at how close the dwellings are on the outside of the castle.
The castle itself has many curiosities to explore, old doorways and window slits to look out of. There is an external wooden staircase to go up for the braver of us or at the other end inside, a spiral staircase that takes you to the highest part of the castle.
Middleham castle has ample history associated with it and would satisfy any historian for quite awhile.
A short distance away is William hill; which is the original defense position of what was a Norman motte and bailey and can be reached by following a track that runs alongside the castle.
