Sawley Abbey - Clitheroe, Lancashire.
In 1146, William third Lord Percy gave land for the construction of Sawley Abbey and then the Percy's continued as patrons of the abbey for most of its existence. The monks almost abandoned it during the 1280s due to a very hard life. Later, the monks found themselves at the center of a Cistercian political squabble because of grain and fishing rights disagreements. During the 1300s the monks also experienced troubled times. This was due to Scottish raids and financial challenges. Today the Abbey is less than its former glory but is still impressive and therefore well worth a visit! This site is one of the easier ancient sites to visit in Great Britain. We had a lovely day at Sawley Abbey and would go again.
